Uttarakhand Cloudburst: 2 Dead, 7 Missing After Landslide in Uttarkashi; Search Operations On (Source: Rediff)
A sudden cloudburst in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, caused a massive landslide on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of two workers and leaving seven others missing. The incident occurred near Barkot, along the Barkot-Yamunotri route, where an under-construction hotel was demolished by the landslide.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated that several agencies, including the NDRF, SDRF, and local emergency teams, are conducting search operations in the area. In a press statement, he confirmed that 20 out of 29 individuals present during the landslide have been rescued. "Two bodies have been recovered, and efforts are being made to find the remaining missing persons," he said.
The authorities said landslides occurred in multiple areas near Silai Band, and a portion of the road was completely washed away. The missing workers were believed to be inside the hotel when it collapsed.
Due to ongoing heavy rain and damaged roads, the Char Dham Yatra has been suspended for 24 hours as a safety measure. CM Dhami assured that basic facilities like food and shelter are being arranged for pilgrims waiting at various locations. He also said that the pilgrimage will resume once the weather becomes stable. According to officials, pilgrims are being held at places like Haridwar, Rishikesh, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Sonprayag, and Vikasnagar for their safety.
The Badrinath Highway, which is a main route for Kedarnath pilgrims, is currently blocked near Nandprayag and Bhanerpani due to landslides. Chamoli Police reported that work is in progress to clear the road and restore connectivity. With continued rainfall, several parts of Uttarakhand are facing transport disruptions and remain under high alert as the monsoon intensifies.
